Myanmar vs Thailand Match Preview: T20 World Cup Qualifier 2026

Myanmar vs Thailand Match

Myanmar vs Thailand Match: Key Players, Playing XI & Predictions – T20 World Cup Qualifier 2026

Thailand are coming off an 183-run win. Myanmar are coming off a heavy defeat and are still waiting for their first win of the tournament. The two sides meet today at the YSD-UKM Cricket Oval in Bangi, in match 17 of the Men’s T20 World Cup Asia Sub-regional Qualifier A. It looks one-sided, but we’ll walk through how each team is placed, who can make a difference, the likely XIs, and who we expect to win.

Match Details

Event: ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia Sub-regional Qualifier A, 2026

Fixture: Myanmar vs Thailand, 17th match

Date: Monday, October 12, 2026

Start: 11:30 AM IST, which is 2:00 PM in Malaysia and 6:00 AM GMT

Ground: YSD-UKM Cricket Oval, Bangi, Malaysia

Why It Matters

Seven teams are playing each other once in Malaysia between October 5 and 14, and the event feeds into qualification for the 2028 Men’s T20 World Cup. Bahrain and Kuwait have been the strongest sides so far. For Thailand, a win today would be their first back-to-back wins of the event. For Myanmar, it would be a first win of any kind. They still have Mongolia to come, a side that was also winless at last check, while Thailand wrap up their campaign against Bhutan on October 14.

Standings Heading In

Team Played Won Lost Points Last Result
Thailand 4 1 3 2 Beat Mongolia by 183 runs
Myanmar 4 0 4 0 Lost to Kuwait by nine wickets

Thailand’s big win lifted their net run rate into positive territory. Myanmar’s sits well below zero.

Thailand: Squad and Form

Thailand have named Jandre Coetzee, Sorawat Desungnoen, Nopphon Senamontree, Kamron Senamontree, Khanitson Namchaikul, Robert Raina, Chaloemwong Chatphaisan, Chanchai Pengkumta, Yodsak Saranonnakkun, Sarawut Maliwan, Narawit Nuntarach, Satarut Rungrueang, and the wicketkeepers Phiriyapong Suanchuai and Akshaykumar Yadav.

Their event began badly. Bahrain beat them, and so did Qatar, by seven wickets, after Thailand could only manage 76 for 9. Kuwait then won by nine wickets on October 8. Thailand were all out for 60 that day, and Kuwait needed just seven overs to get there. Friday was the turnaround. Batting first against Mongolia, Thailand piled up 196 for 2, then bowled Mongolia out for 13 in 11.3 overs. Phanuphong Thongsa took the player of the match award.

Myanmar: Squad and Form

Myanmar’s group includes captain Htet Lin Aung, Htet Lin Oo, Aung Ko Ko, Ko Ko Lin Thu, Nyein Cham Soe, Nay Lin Htun, Myat Thu Aung, Paing Danu, Khin Aye, Pyae Phyo Wai, Kaung Htet Kyaw, and the wicketkeepers Swann Htet Ko Ko, Thuya Aung, and Ye Naing Tun.

It has been a hard run. Bhutan opened their campaign with a 27-run win on October 5, and Bahrain and Qatar have also beaten them since. Sunday’s loss to Kuwait was the heaviest. Myanmar were bowled out for 34, and Kuwait chased it down in four overs. History hasn’t been kind either. When they played this same qualifier in 2024, Myanmar finished sixth out of seven with one win in six games.

Likely Playing XIs

Neither side had announced its team at the time of writing. These are projections from recent selections, so check the toss for the final line-ups.

No. Thailand Myanmar

5 Chaloemwong Chatphaisan Ko Ko Lin Thu
6 Nopphon Senamontree Nyein Cham Soe
7 Chanchai Pengkumta Htet Lin Oo

Players to Watch

Thailand

  • Jandre Coetzee. He was player of the match the last time these teams met, scoring 40 off 29 balls in 2023. He can bat and bowl, and Myanmar’s attack has seen plenty of him.
  • Nopphon Senamontree. Pre-tournament previews called him Thailand’s leading recent wicket-taker. When the batting has let the team down, he has been the one asked to dig them out.
  • Khanitson Namchaikul. His 4 for 7 against Myanmar in 2023 was the standout spell of that match. A repeat with the new ball would put Myanmar in trouble early.

Myanmar

  • Htet Lin Aung. The captain, and the batter Myanmar lean on most. A long innings from him gives the lower order something to build around.
  • Paing Danu. He took 3 for 23 in four overs against Bhutan, going at under six an over. He is Myanmar’s best option for early wickets.
  • Pyae Phyo Wai and Khin Aye. Both bowled against Thailand in 2023 and have shared the overs again this time. They know what to expect and will need to hold things together in the middle overs.

Head-to-Head and Key Matchups

It was on July 28, 2023, in Kuala Lumpur, and Thailand won by 101 runs. They made 140 for 6, with Raina scoring 42 and Coetzee 40, and Myanmar were bowled out for 39.

The batting is where this game will be decided. Myanmar have been dismissed for 34 and 39 in their last two meetings with these opponents’ level of attack, and they need to stay in for at least 15 overs to have a chance. Thailand’s problem is the opposite. Their top order has collapsed twice in this tournament, for 60 and 76 for 9, so a strong start from Suanchai and Yadav matters. Coetzee against Myanmar’s new-ball bowlers is another contest worth watching.

Prediction

Thailand should win. They have the better record against Myanmar, the more convincing recent performance, and a full three days between games, while Myanmar are back on the field less than 24 hours after being bowled out for 34. The Mongolia result also shows how quickly this batting line-up can run away with a game when the top order clicks.

Myanmar can make it uncomfortable if Paing Danu and Pyae Phyo Wai pick up wickets in the first six overs and Thailand’s collapse problem returns. Realistically, though, the batting is too thin to defend or chase much. Our pick: Thailand.
